Product kinds and sizes
Devices in IR come in many sizes, and the size is often what tells two products apart. A 5 mm balloon and a 6 mm balloon are different products. The size fields on a product change to suit the kind of device, so you always see the right labels.
Who can: Owner, Admin, Member, Inventory manager edit a product's sizes. Everyone who can see inventory sees them.
How the size fields work
Fields follow the kind of device
The Name and Category decide which size fields show:
- Balloon or stent — French size (the sheath it fits) and shaft length in cm, plus the balloon or stent itself: diameter Ø and length, in mm.
- Coil — coil diameter in mm and coil length in cm.
- Needle — gauge (G) and length.
- Anything else — diameter (usually French) and length.
Use + Add implant size to give any other device an implant Ø and length.
Units
- Fr (French) is the standard catheter and sheath size: 3 Fr = 1 mm across. 5F, 5 fr and 5 French are all saved as 5Fr.
- G (gauge) — needle size; higher is thinner.
- mm / cm — implant sizes are always mm.
Where sizes come from
Sizes from FDA data (GUDID) are used first. When there are none, sizes are read from the product name, e.g. "2.0MM X 80MM 150CM", and marked so you check them against the label.
You can open the same help from the ? button next to Size when editing a product.
Wire size
Wire size is separate from the device's own size. For a guidewire it is the wire's diameter. For a catheter or sheath it is the wire the device takes, such as 0.035". Pick in (0.001 to 1) or mm (up to 25). Clearing the number clears the units too. It shows on the product's details card.
Where sizes show
A product's size is written in front of its name wherever the name appears, for example "6 × 100 mm · 80cm · 5Fr — Balloon name". You will see it:
- in the Inventory list and search results,
- at the top of the product page, where the details card spells each size out with its label, such as Balloon size, Shaft length and French size, or Gauge and Length for a needle, and
- in the Add stock dialog, under the product's name.
Where a size comes from
When you add a product, or link a barcode the app doesn't know yet while scanning (see Unknown barcodes), it fills sizes in for you, in this order:
- What you type. Anything you enter, even if you clear a box, is never overwritten.
- Size data from GUDID, the FDA's device database, found through the barcode. See the Glossary.
- A size read from the product's name, such as "2.0MM X 80MM 150CM". The app only does this when the name gives one clear answer with its units. A size filled in this way is marked Size from name — check it.
Imported spreadsheets work the same way, with the sheet's columns coming first. On a product that already exists, an import fills in empty fields only and never changes a size that is already set. The Edit screen never fills anything in for you. It shows what is saved.
Fixing a wrong size
- Open the product and choose Edit.
- In Size, correct the values. The labels follow the product's name and category, so a wrong kind shows the wrong boxes. If a balloon doesn't show balloon fields, check that its name or category says "balloon".
- Use + Add implant size to give any device an implant diameter and length.
- Save.
Units are tidied for you. "5F", "5 fr" and "5 French" are all saved as 5Fr. Implant sizes are always in millimetres, up to 50 mm across and 500 mm long.
